I just purchased a Rostock Max V2 used and preassembled (purchased as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend). I'm a total 3d-printing newbie (this is the first time I've laid my hands on one). I spent way too long calibrating it the night before last and decided to print a couple of simple objects last night. I'm including an Imgur gallery of my prints (please feel free to provide feedback / troubleshooting steps).

That's a lucky girlfriend I suppose. Looks like a bog-standard machine, so you don't have to work around half-assed upgrades, and the fact that the shrouds match is a nice touch. Those prints look pretty good, some adhesion/warping issues, some that look like incorrect extrusion multipliers, but it being Hatchbox, it's hard to tell what's the printer and what's the filament.

Don't worry about being new, most people are when they first get here, and there's plenty of friendly, competent people like Mr. Hackney, Brandon of tricklaser, and 626 Pilot. Take a look through the various threads and see if you see anything you like. If you get confused by anything, or have a question, feel free to ask.

I'm currently using the remainder of the spool that was provided w/the printer. I'll be grabbing another spool or two soon. Is Hatchbox to be avoided?

Hatchbox is a bit variable. I've had spools that won't print well at all, and some which print nicely enough. I find the pricier filaments usually print better, although getting a mid range filament seems to be the best compromise in most cases. SeemeCNC's brand of filament works quite well, as do ones like Colorfabb. The cut rate filaments can be a right pain, because some spools just can't be gotten to print right, or end up well over diameter and so won't go through the Bowden at all. The pricey ones will print well, but compared to the mid range stuff, most of the time you don't need the better finish or properties.

Did you happen to notice the gaps on the right side of the single layer disk I printed (you can see red through them)? I printed two and both had that problem, any clue what's causing it?

Also, when a print begins it draws a line somewhere just out side of the printable area (I'm assuming that this is a prep/cleaning step); mine are spotty. Is this a problem or to be expected?

just don't entirely trust the titles assigned to the posters, (the ULTIMATE 3D JEDDI Can be trusted they are all amazing ) but for example look at the title I have I know very little and I am just half way through my build. but the titles seem to be assigned based on the number of posts someone makes... I do have some knowledge of things like soldering techniques and I might jump into a thread on that topic but right now my experience of 3D printing is nil and I don't rate the title printmaster by a very long mark.. (now PintMaster HIC I can lay claim to BURP) a year from now if I pay attention to people like mhackney and work at it I may become a talented novice.
I am just the talky sort.
The support that the experts here freely offered is truly a pearl of great price.
