Help with print configuration new MAX V2

Hi guys,

Last year I put together a super cheap QU-BD TwoUp. I decided to step up to something a little more serious and bought the Rostock MAX V2. I'll admit this printer has been much more difficult to set up for quality prints then the TwoUp. I'm currently using 1.75mm Hatchbox ABS and am shooting to produce prints more on the side of quality of then speed. I've redone the tower calibration a couple of times, calibrated the extruder and messed with retraction settings to finally remove the oozing and fine strings I was seeing.

Now I'm left with these tentacles that are coming off the parts. I'm not sure whether to work more on retraction settings, temps or speed to reduce the issue?

I believe that is partially a problem of printing hatchbox at a slightly higher temp than it likes, Hatchbox's tendency towards stringing anyways, and having the nozzle lift off of the part while printing those small towers. Tell me, while it's printing, does the nozzle ever move to the side and stop printing for a few moments? If so, you can reduce the minimum layer time, or turn off the setting that lifts the nozzle away from the print. You could also increase your retraction. But if it's not the case, then you're stuck with playing with temps, speeds, and retraction, rather than the simplest option. I find my spool of black hatchbox likes about 218, 220, but I'm using an E3D hotend, so you may get away with lower temps, as you have less friction in the hotend itself.

Also, what is that object? It's quite interesting, and rather odd.

My condolences on your TwoUp purchase. A friend of mine bought the OneUp and the only real use I could see for it once built, was to throw it at the idiot that designed it. :)

It does look like you're printing a bit on the hot side. You might want to slow down a bit as well. That'll give the ABS time to bleed off some of the heat.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Well I've played around some more and managed to improve the print a bit. It turns out the wipe feature was messing it up quite a bit. With small parts like this it has nowhere to wipe over and so it would just go over thin air causing the tentacles. I still have a ways to go though.

Is there anyway to set a first layer temp that changes later on in MatterControl? I can't seem to get this filament to adhere to the bed at anything below 225 but like you guys said, I'd like to print the rest of my layers at a lower temp. Also since I opened the filament it has been popping and crackling occasionally which can't help

Here's the improved print:
