Is there firmware already installed on the ramps1.4 kit?
I assumed ( dangerous I know ) not and yet I get errors when
compiling the Repetier FW.. looking for a better source for firmware if
I must load one.

hsb, John here. The guys at ultimachine pre-load sprinter on the RAMPS boards. If you are having trouble compiling repetier, what version of arduino are you using? I've found if I use 0023 i don't get any problems, but V1.0 does have some compiling issues with some of the firmwares out there.

Most firmware will not complile with 1.0 without additional libraries I believe these are sufficient

Marlin/Sprinter and Repetier all compile with 0.23 without issue
