I'm scheming about building a machine with 400 step motors on Smoothie. I know that several others have already gone this way. What motors have you had good or bad luck with?
I was banking on the custom spec BerryBot motors to fit the bill, but while Werner says they're extremely quiet, they're 1.8 deg motors.

I have never had a problem with a Vexta motor before (also known as Oriental motors). I have used a number of their steppers in various styles and sizes ,including 0.9 degree.
Probably cheapest to find some used ones, I think new they are pretty spendy in low qty. ($39 for a PKP243MD06A-L.

Actually they have 5-phase steppers that do .36 degrees per step for $73. But you can't drive those with a standard driver. If I ever build a bigger printer from scratch, I am tempted to use them.

Looked at the "usual" places like Adafruit, Inventables, Ultimachine, RepRap Discount, etc... I really only found motors at SparkFun without having to order them from a more industrial supplier.
