Issues with printing

I have my Rostock V2 calibrated as well as I can (having done the calibration routine until I can do it with my eyes closed ;-).

Can anyone point me in the correct direction as to what setting would be causing the layers to print with these gaps? The attached pic is the bottom layer of a partially printed Octopus Fridge Magnet - printed with ABS.

My print bed consists of; copper heat dispersion plate, borosilicate plate, layer of PEI (Polyetherimide) Sheet, Opaque Off-White, Standard Tolerance, ASTM D5205 PEI0113, 0.03" Thickness adhered to the borosilicate plate with the TapeCase 468MP 0.5in X 20yd Adhesive Transfer Tape.

I am running my prints with the following characteristics; (please let me know if you need any additional information)

Software - Repetier - Host V1.0.5 with Slic3r V 1.1.7
Default Rostock hot end (although I do have a E3D V6 waiting in the wings once I can get the mounts to print correctly for attachment

SLic3r settings;
Print Settings
Layer Height = 0.2 mm
First Layer height = 0.25 mm
Fill Density = 40% Honeycomb
Top/bottom fill pattern = rectilinear
All speeds = 30 mm/s

Filament Settings
Diameter = 1.75mm
Extrusion multiplier = 1
Extruder Temp = 225
Bed Temp = 90

EEPROM Settings - see attached jpg

Although i am still struggling with my PEI build surface,

2 things come to mind.

1st have you calibrated your extrusion? Checkout this video by a forum memeber:

Secondly if that doesnt work, you can try lying to your printer and say that your nozzle is 0.49 instead of 0.5.


Your print looks pretty nice in my opinion. Is there a problem on the other side?

Not sure what the issue is with your print, what gaps are you talking about? If you're referring to the tiny recesses on the first layer in between extrusion lines, thats pretty much normal. If you have your bed that well calibrated then you can lower your first layer height to something more like .1-.2mm and they won't be so evident.

If you're referring to the circular bit where the magnet goes with the overhang, that looks normal to me as well, overhangs do tend to have some issues with drooping, giving the appearance of "gaps".

Really your part there looks pretty solid, good job on the build.

I agree with the others that your print is of very high quality. I have yet to see anything come off my glass print bed without some visible striping. It does look to me like there is more of a gap where your infill meets the perimeter. I don't think the setting exists in Slic3r, but some slicing programs allow you to adjust the insertion/overshoot for securing infill to perimeters. You might give Matter Control a try (there is a Rostock ready version on the SeeMeCNC download page). The Matter Slice slicer (based on Cura slicer, I think) has a setting under Infill > Advanced > Infill Overlap that specifies a distance to imbed the infill securely.

Looking at your completed print, just posted. It is outstanding. You could print at a 0.1mm layer for slightly better surface finish, but you've really nailed it as is.
