I designed a custom side panel with a hole for a 40mm fan and thought i would share.

Looks nice, but why not just drills needed for the fan opening and mounting in the original piece?

Why not a larger fan? More airflow seems like a good thing to me, I have 2 5V 70mm fans from an old laptop cooler on my X3 Pro that work pretty nice, need a better mount for them though..

I went with a 92mm side fan. I had access to someone with a laser cnc that helped me do some customizing. The fan just fits in the normal side opening.

I like that acrylic piece a lot. I think I'll have to do that!

Did you just feed it with 12volts?

I've got one of those and I plan on 2 covers with fan holes in them and only one fan, haven't tried to power it yet

Because the plastic coating on melamine tends to chip and flake and looks crappy after you cut it.

That's why you're supposed to finish it off with a fan guard you print.

Cut and drilled mine using an end mill (think router cutter), chipping is not too much of an issue.

Mounted 2 90mm 5VDC Fans.

If you used a fish-tail bit, that would explain the lack of tearing.

Would a wt bit work without tearing the melamine?

Don't know what that is?

Used a 1/8" Carbide 2 Flute End Mill, 5140 RPMS, 45IPM, Climb Cutting and circular interpolated the screw holes slightly to open them up.

Fish tail bits usually are 2 fluted. It's the point that differentiates them.

I have not done this modification yet, have you noticed it running any different/better with the fans? Thanks!

I picked up a PC power supply cable adaptor from radio shack and spliced the fan wire to the 12v plugs that were for hard drives ( yellow and black wires). When I have the printer on the fan is running.

Side note, for some reason not all of my power plugs had power on the when I did this but I did get one with voltage so I didn't have to splice the fans to the larger pugs like we did to the Rambo board.

That was the power wires from the fan right?

Black and yellow to have 12 volts applied to them, I know there are other colours but we don't need them!

The blak and yellow are the power supply cables, fans will be labeled depending on manufacture. Mine was also yellow and black for 12v.
