Red Neck Printer Enclosure!

I needed to enclose my printer because of the ABS fumes and to contain heat. I have plans to build or buy something better, but I need to pay off the printer first.

So in the meantime I repurposed the shipping box. With that, a glass picture frame, a dowel rod, and a roll of clear packing tape, I now have a rather ugly, but perfectly functional printer enclosure!

Hopefully now that nagging cough I picked up from inhaling fumes while gazing at the printer will clear up!

An ingenious recycling of the shipping box. This is one of those "why didn't I think of that". Great job!

Buy some of that sticky carbonfiber looking tape or bettery yet, some wallpaper that your wife likes and you can live with the box for a long time.

That's a good idea. I live alone though, so pretty isn't that important. I'm kinda liking the SeeMeCNC theme - though Blinky's upside down eyes are a little creepy.

So I'm going to be getting an Orion in the next month or so. It's going to be in the loft part of the apartment, so I want to try and keep the fumes to a minimum(wife and kids) and to prevent my cats from attacking the cool new toy. I though this might work, maybe get a vent to a window for fumes. Should I drill some holes in it for airflow, maybe hook up some fans?

Dimensions are 32x20x33 so the Orion should fit with room to spare.

Are those ikea?

You do not need to make a vent.

But if you do, you should attach a hose and run the fan only when you have finished the print purging the smelly air to the outside.

Yep, 80 bucks. Pretty good. Eventually I will probably cut windows into the wooden doors and put in lexan so I can see all the fun.

You may want to start going around construction sites to collect scrap insulation materials. This will help with the shound isnulation. With these kinds of rigid structures you could be amplifying the sound.

Also, when it vibrates and it is connected to the grdound it makes the whole floor vibrate and make it like a massive speaker. So multiple pieces of carpet under the unit will be beneficial.

This is all speculation though. Have not tried it myself (yet).

I wish someone would start up a company to build custom enclosures. the need for something pre-built will continue to grow as more non-tinkerers get into 3D printing,

I doubt there is much money in that.

Ikea is your best bet.

The simplest way to do an enclosure for a Rostock MAX v2 (short of a Hefty Bag) is to get a 24" diameter Sonotube, put a lid on it and cut a door into the side. :)

I just looked at the sonotubes, and the cheapest 24" one is over $100. I'll stick with wood.

I don't get why this is redneck. It looks top of the line to me! You should sell these designs to NASA for their 3D printer enclosures :P
