hot end salvageable?

So, I ran auto-tune and all was well, then I turned up the temperature to begin calibration and as I got near the base, the hot end started smoking a bit. I shut it down, but I think I was too late:

Is this salvageable or am I in the market for a new hot end?

Upon further inspection it looked as if the thermistor had come slightly loose on one side but still attached to the hot end...Is this it or could it have been something else?

Thanks,
Marc

You can order a new piece of PEEK (the gray plastic in the middle) from SeeMe, and it'll screw between the top and bottom pieces of aluminum no problem.

Are the heating resistor and thermistor ok?

Ok, thanks...found the peek

The heating resistors seem fine...How would I know if those were bad?

The thermistor acted a little strange when I turn the system back on. It read -8 C for a little while and then came up to room temp. Should that be ok, or should I replace that too?

Thanks

You might seriously consider a Screw In Mounted Thermistor. The RTV itself is a bit of an insulator and not a real good adhesive. I followed Gene's YouTube upgrade and went to a 40W Cartridge Heater and M3 Screw In Thermistor in the initial assembly. Also wrapped the Hot End with Silicon Tape. Parts from eBay.

Yeah, the screw-in thermistors are just awesome. If you don't have the desire to do the tapping, etc, at least wrap the hot end with the silicone wrap. It'll go a long way toward keeping the thermistor in place.

Man, I wish there was a link to that in the guide...would have done that from the start! :/

How do I remove the damage peek, just twist left?

At times the use of Energetic Material may be required to remove the offending part.

Just get someone to hold your beer while you light it.
