Rostock V2 thermistor fail

After uploading the newest firmware (0.91 I think), I got the following error in Repetier while trying to bring the bed and hotend up to temperature during the calibration setup: (I didn't have the SD card inserted during this test, hense the init fail)

< 10:58:57 PM: Error:Printer set into dry run mode until restart!
I am assuming the bed thermistor is ok from the line that says heated bed: working, but as long as the extruder 0: shows a defect, I can't test the bed. If I remove the wires from the Rambo that go to the hotend, would it bypass the defect and allow me to test the bed at least?
I've checked my wires, all the crimp connections too and with a meter I was able to verify them working. Just soldered up the hotend today, so I can try and redo it tomorrow to make sure the solder joint was ok, any other suggestions?

can you still pull your thermistor out of the hot end and ensure that it is not shorting to itself or the hot end? if you disconnect the thermistor, you will still get the def/0 displays.

I can try... thought I'd check the solder joint first since all the wires and crimps up to it are testing ok. Both the bed and hotend give a def/0 reading on the LCD display, yet repetier seems to say my bed is ok.
Just finished the printer construction today and have been very careful about the electronics and static... Was concerned when I turned on the printer for the first time and it already had firmware running... thought it was supposed to be blank.

if it happened right after uploading the new firmware, it may be from the software part of things.
You should check your new pin.h file corresponds to your olf pins.h file, or if you don't have it to where you plugged the thermistor on the board.

Even with the preloaded firmware it gave me that def/0 on the printer LCD as well as an warning in repetier... how and where can I look at the pins.h file to be sure?

Don't mess with the pins.h file - they're set correctly if you're using the SeeMeCNC version of the firmware.
Check the thermistor with a multi-meter at the 2 pin connector. If you put your finger on the hot end next to the thermistor port, you should see the resistance value change as your body temp heats up the metal.

Did that with the Onyx and immediately got a reading. Still nothing from the hot end though... going to check my soldering points on the hot end today to make sure they are making good contact and not shorting out each other. Can the thermistor short out if the head of it is touching the hot end? Perhaps I didn't get enough RTV on it??

It shouldn't short out if the tiny ptfe tubing is properly seated. It's possible that you got a defective thermistor - it happens sometimes.

I just finished putting the meter on both the bed and hot end by connecting the meter to the 2 wires that plug into the RAMBo. I used a hairdryer to heat up both parts (separately), and both gave the same immediate results. The meter started counting down from apx 94.7. Once I turned off the hair dryer and let them start cooling, the number began rising again back to around 94.7.
Doesn't this indicate that the thermistors and all wiring/crimps are ok and it is something with either the RAMBo or something else?
I'm out of ideas.

Are you sure you plugged the thermistor connector to the right header ?

I've checked it against the documentation and the RAMBo board printout several times now and even opened everything up, disconnected all the wires, tested them all with a multimeter then re-attached following the docs again... Twice! Still same outcome.
Sent a photo of it to the support team and hope they can figure it out.
It is my understanding that the thermistor and the two resistors in the hot end have no polarity right?

that is correct no polarity, you Should get your board Replaced Repaird but if you wanted to get it working you could move the hot end thermistor from t_zero to t_one

Just to further test it, would I need to change any other wires or config files?

ok save a duplicate of your firmware, and in the copy change in your configuration.h
Code: Select all
#define EXT0_TEMPSENSOR_PIN TEMP_0_PIN
to
Code: Select all
#define EXT0_TEMPSENSOR_PIN TEMP_2_PIN
upload to RAMBo and plug your thermistor into T1, reboot the board and see what you get.

Must be a bad RAMBo... Made the change you gave above and here is the result, minus the def/0 and extruder 0: temp sensor defect message in Repetier.
Thanks for saving my sanity!
Bed is heating up in Repetier, but the hot end is not... at least it sees it now, must be more wrong with the RAMBo than the t0 pins...

no i forgot to tell you to change something
in your pins.h
scroll down to board type = 301
change the values to match this
Code: Select all
#define HEATER_BED_PIN 3
#define TEMP_BED_PIN 2
#define HEATER_0_PIN 9
#define TEMP_0_PIN 0
#define HEATER_1_PIN 3
#define TEMP_1_PIN 2
#define HEATER_2_PIN 7
#define TEMP_2_PIN 1

#define TEMP_0_PIN 0
#define HEATER_1_PIN 3
#define TEMP_1_PIN 2
#define HEATER_2_PIN 7
#define TEMP_2_PIN 1
This is what I have now:
#define HEATER_BED_PIN 3
#define TEMP_BED_PIN 2
#define HEATER_0_PIN 9
#define TEMP_0_PIN 0
#define HEATER_1_PIN 7
#define TEMP_1_PIN 3
#define HEATER_2_PIN -1
#define TEMP_2_PIN -1
When I used the ones you gave above, it came back with the def/0 again...

so in your configuration.h you changed the
Code: Select all
#define EXT0_TEMPSENSOR_PIN TEMP_2_PIN
now your pins.h TEMP_2_PIN needs to be
the "-1" values disable the setting
make sure you are in the correct motherboard paragraph RAMBo = 301

ok so attached is my rambo, ive written on it with my current setup.
on the top you see ext0 wired into heat0, on the right you have its thermistor wired into t0 on the board which is heat_0_pin in the firmware.
we think that something in your t0 is messed up on the board so we want to hook your thermistor for ext0 onto t1 which is heat_2_pin in firmware.

Just finished completely re-wiring the hot end itself with a new quick release. Either my moving it around or excessively taping it this time worked! Got a good temp reading and the PID auto tune is working on t0 like it should. Thanks for all the suggestions and your help!

I reseated my thermistor and it worked better, I imagine they are picky. Don't forget to calibrate them now. As per manual. The graph will tell you if it is working good or not.

Cheers! I am in the middle of the setup tests and calibration right now. With any luck, my ABS will be on my doorstep today and fan shrouds will be printing by this afternoon!

Spoke too soon... it seems that the Mac Version of Repetier doesn't like to communicate well with my printer... going to have to try it out on a PC to see if it works. I got past the bed and hot end auto tune and then to the extruder section and now Repetier won't heat the hot end or bed by putting in a temperature and hitting heat... but I need to heat the hot end for the extruder motor test so I do it using the LCD... heats up fine, but then repetier won't let me extrude anything using the buttons for extruding... very frustrating! Going to hook up a PC now and try my luck, fingers crossed its just a glitch in the Mac software.
To be continued...

cgbobio, head over to the SeeMeCNC download page and grab the MacOS version of MatterControl and try that.
