Looking to switch out my x-axis carriage. Are the smooth rods the same distance apart as a mendel , Huxley or prusa?

My MM has 8mm rods with an interior spacing of 42.5mm ish. This was the same carriage I used on my prusa. I do not have an H-1.

I just finished constructing my H-1 earlier this year (bought the kit June 2012, then life intervened...)

I am also interested in an upgraded X-axis carriage assembly. I've been thinking a lot about how it might be easy enough to swap out the 90 degree clamps that hold the 0.25" smooth rod and replaced with new 90 degree clamps that hold 8mm rod. It's quite easy to find 8mm linear bearings (SeeMeCNC has them in their shop, for example!) at good prices. Then, the next step would be a redesigned X carriage to hold the 8mm bearings. There's a redesigned carriage on thigiverse http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17760 that, according to the comments, looks as if it would accommodate a 15mm OD x 25mm length bearing.

So, maybe all that's missing is a new 90 degree clamp, to fit 8mm rod?

My 3D CAD skills are rudimentary at best (I am an EE by trade) and I was hoping I could find the original design of the 90 degree clamp in some format that 123D would accept (e.g. STEP) but I do not find this. If someone DOES go this route, or even better, already HAS a solution for this, I would really like to hear about it!

Looks like John may have had one on there, probably took it down due to the occupy thing that happened awhile back. It was here...

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:16615 Maybe he can e-mail it to you?

Of course, like all good ideas, someone else had this first! :-)

Here I see a very nice looking design by a member here for a new X carriage that accepts 8mm bearings, has fan bracket, etc.

http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... +rod#p2307

Anyone try this carriage design? I did not find the STL for the 8mm version, only the reworked for 6mm version.

The idea of flipping the rod clamps to the topside of the Z platforms is intriguing.
