Has anyone moved the extruder to the top plate, directly above the hotend? Obviously the wires need to be extended, but there appears to be enough space for the bowden and extruder motor to sit below the top plate in that center section. Thinking about designing a mount to do that, I just wanted to check and see if anyone's tried that before. Theoretically it should improve extrusion accuracy as the bowden wouldn't be bent as much, though I doubt it would make a significant difference. I'm mainly looking to clean up the bottom end as much as possible...

And you are happy with the setup? I'm in the process of designing a drop-in replacement bracket that the user can keep the the stock extruder, just moving it up...

I'm not so sure how great that will be, it will definitely cut down on your travel speed cababilities due to it's mass.

I would like to see you try to use a smaller sized nema stepper at the very least.

That bulk and weight will also affect print quality, I think anyways.

Noooooo, not mounting it on the actual carriage, but in the center of the top plate of the towers. Yeah, I wouldn't direct drive the Rostock...

If I was going to use Steve's extruder on top, I would just make a spacer to keep the gears off the plate and set it upside down. It's heavy enough to not mover around I think.

I had thought about that but didn't for a couple of reasons. One, my bowden tube isn't long enough. Two, I would have had to reverse the direction of the extruder, which I can do, I just don't want to. Third, I want to make it as simple of a move for people as possible. As it is, it looks like I have to drill a couple holes, and extend some wire. Anybody that's gone through the build ought to be able to handle that.
