Why are there O-rings on the bowden cable push-in fittings?

Is it because they're designed for hoses carrying liquids, or is there a need for them on our printers?

Usually compressed air. I haven't tried without, maybe it works, maybe the treads are not deep enough.

Yes., because they are designed for compressed air or low pressure fluids. They also act like lock nuts and keep the PTC fittings from backing out.
