Firmware loading issue

Hi all,
I had a search through the board but didn't find anything relevant to this problem.
I've had my Rostock Max V3 running for over a year without any problems. I decided to do some upgrades. Main upgrade is to the .9 degree stepper motors. I modified the firmware in the Arduino IDE. I sent the clear eeprom sketch to the Rambo fine. When I attempt to send the firmware sketch, It fails. I turned on verbose output on the loading. It does the read of the board fine but then it comes up with "Writing | avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
It repeats this 6 more times then reports "avrdude: stk500v2_getsync(): timeout communicating with programmer"
These reports start over again for 3 more cycles then it comes up with "An error occurred while uploading the sketch"
Any ideas on what I'm missing?
Roger
