Safety issues....

Post by JakeCShake »

My brother-in-law (my bro) and I have completed our kit and I haven't been there in a few weeks. But are there any concerns about the the uncirculated fumes from this printer to kids and family?!?!? Also, I see prints that go overnight......any concern for fire, etc. This doesn't seem to be a UL listed device...any advice or recommend advice for fuses and proactive advice for safety measures??? I now, boring being a bachelor, but important to my extended family....

At the temperatures you're printing at none of the fumes should be harmful, having said that I'd strongly suggest running it in a well ventilated area.
It's technically possible for the hotend to heat to the point it melts the peak holder, and if there is no short it won't blow a fuse. I guess there is a potential fire risk, though it would probably top out in the 300C range, and very likely just burn out the resistor, and leave you in need of a new hotend.

Almost all hotend failures are the result of poor assembly, just be careful assembling, I just took my hotend apart to make a modification and noted that I'd let the insulation on the resistor wires touch the heater block, which had very nearly burned through the insulation

There are fuses on the driver board, 3 in fact, one for the hotend, one for the heated bed and one for the steppers.
I don't know of any hotend that includes a thermal fuse, the guy who designed the JHead did some experimentation on this, unfortunately they are not widely available rated for the temperatures that most people print.
