Ok, so I just finished putting together the max a few days ago and had pretty good results with the the first few prints.
I am using mattercontrol and everthing is set just as the directions say.
I noticed that I was having some major bed adhesion problems especially with the loops around the print to prime the nozzle. After I calibrated enough to get those loops to stick (I just picked a print and printed the first layer a few times) when the machine actually went to the print itself the nozzle could barely squeeze out filament at all.
I then spent about two hours adjusting the radius and calibrating. I noticed that I had to loosen the Z axis screw by about 3mm more than the rest. I think that may be a symptom of my problem.
Well when I started trying to print again I noticed that the first several layers of my prints would shift over by about a mm/layer. It would then finish the rest of the print on the last shifted layer. It would shift away from the Z tower, the one I had to loosen the screw by a lot on. I also tried printing a few other things, making sure that the problem would follow, but it only did half the time. This points me in the direction of a software problem, since it only happens on some, more complex/bigger (not by much) prints.
Nevertheless, I started looking for a mechanical problem because software is an unlikely cause for failure.
I thought, ok the nozzle is catching on the print, causing the Z belt to skip, so I spent another hour leveling. This was the next print:
The shift was lessened but not elimnated and it also revealed some interesting things on its first layer:
I don't understand why the nozzle is closer to the bed on that one spot compared to the parallel line. The nozzle was also dragging slightly during travel moves on the second layer when I stopped the print.
This is pretty much where I am now. I am printing a benchmark print in the form of an owl, which seems to be doing quite well.....
Nothing is consistent. I can't pin anything.
Thoughts?
EDIT: I solved the layer shift problem, the Z stepper was not securely attached to the gear, which was slipping a bit.
The motors are still getting fairly warm though....
