Duel extruders questions.

I'm interested in learning more about duel extruders. From what I gather you basically modify the current hotend to fit two exturders. I'm sure I can manage getting all that together, but where do you get the software to run this type of setup, or is that something you also have to experiment with? Does anyone have this setup?
Any advice is welcome, I'm looking for a shove in the right direction.
