LED ring wiring noob question

Post by shentheory »

So I would really love to attach an LED ring to my hot end. But when it comes to electrical things, i am a total noob.

Here is the process in my head, i want to find out just how horribly wrong i am!

1. Cut off the JST connector i have on PEEK fan power leads that come down from the top
2. Soldier 2 new red wires to the end of the red PEEK fan power lead, making a Y connection. Do the same for black.
3. Now I have 2 pairs of power leads, one goes to the PEEK fan, the other to LEDs.

Am I way off? is there a better way? If I'm right, I'm curious what gauge wire I would need. By now I don't have any extra from my kit. Much appreciated!!!

I cheated.

I bought the LED ring from Trick Laser. It was designed to mount to the earlier design of effector plate, but works OK with the latest version. Just use a couple of tie-wraps through the mounting holes rather than messing with longer screws.

For wiring, TL includes a JST lead already connected to the ring, as well as a mating pigtail for your use. I "cheated" by soldering the pigtail to the ring also. That gave me a ring with both sexes of JST on it. Unplug PEEK fan from harness. Plug ring into harness. Plug fan into ring. The end.

yes, you are correct. wiring like you described will be fine.
most any small wire is fine, like what is already on the jst connector. about 24 gauge I would guess.

Instead of cutting off a good connector, I made a Y adaptor to turn the peek connector to two connectors.

Wow that's cool. Can you explain this a little more? How did you manage to get the 4 wires coming out of that first connector instead of soldiering them???

I found this already done:

Isn't that basically just what I would need?

That picture looks like what I made, but I crimped mine. The pins can handle two wires per pin but you need to squeeze the strain relief part of the pin so they will fit in the housing. Either way will work for you.
