Repetier-Host Slic3r hangs when Slicing??

Post by elwooddbeauchamp »

I am slicing a large round piece, 270mm dia., and when I run Slic3r, it gets the progress bar all but a short way across and seems to hang...for a looong time. It says "Exporting G-code to C:\Users...etc

What is going on? Thanks for suggestions..

It is just taking a very long time on a large part. You can go to the directory where the gcode file is being complied and see if the file is slowly growing in size. I find that on large parts especially if honeycomb fill is used that this can take a very, very long time.

I also initially thought that the program was hung but going to the temp file I could see it growing slowly but steadily larger. Opening and closing the file using NotePad, I could also see the g-code being appended to the file. This file eventually reached about 90meg and took a couple of hours. This speed can be aided by changing the number of threads under the Configure button but adding threads with no available free memory does little good.

On Windows 7 this file is normally under: C:\users\(your user name)\appdata\local\repetier.

See if you have the option to avoid crossing perimeters checked. That can cause it to take wayyy longer when exporting the gcode.

Ahhhh...this part, as you, nitewatchman, hav seen is quite large...earlier (Successful) slicings, before the "Part too large" error, there were 700+ layers and 43 hours to print. I DO have the perimeters checked...will start it again and watch a movie...

Or try another slicer :)

This is one of Slic3r's "features" that none of the others seem to share and it annoys the hell out of me.

Well...update...got the print Slic3d...took over 20 hours...Log says "...Filament required..465946mm "

Error code then appears..."out of system memory"

What can I do now to salvage 20 hours of Slicing? I saved the Composition.gcode file to a folder. I saved the Composition.obj and Slic3r config files as well.

If I save the program to an SD card, will it run on the Rostock max alone?

Can I attempt to load the file into Matter Control or another Print program?

I have an AMD 3.6 GHz Quad Core with 24 GB Ram, but running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit (due to version compatibility with my AutoCad 2000 and only 3 (+-) GB ram usable.

Should I bite the bullet and just reinstall Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit to take advantage of the full memory available? Will that help with this issue?

ALSO....HOW MANY SPOOLS OF FILAMENT WILL I NEED TO COVER 2 TIMES 465946mm? is there like 1000mm/spool? (1.75mm dia filament)

I assume this is your impellor,,,,, What setttings are you using for perimeters? What type of infill are you using? What is your infill density set at?

Yes, absolutely upgrade to 64 bit. What's the point in having 24gigs of RAM if you can only use 3? :?: Also, as per previous advice, try a different slicer. I've been using Cura for most of my slicing lately and it is MUCH faster than slic3r. I'd also recommend the stand alone version, the version in repetier host doesn't seem to have all the options and what not.

Thanks...I just finished redoing my impeller, sectioning it into quarters...to make 4 one quarter sections and joining them by bonding into the solid unit...

I used Cura, and didn't need to "Repair" the STL as with every print before, as Repetier-Host made me do. Each section is sliced, ready to print in a couple of minutes. 19 hours per section. With the frequent power outages here in the sticks, I feel much better about the shorter time per part.

I don't suppose someone would be kind enough to offer to me a slice Config file for PLA for the Rostock Max v2?...I am not sure about those settings I did...I will certainly print a small item to test it out, but a working file would be so comforting to be able to load for the 19 hour jobs.

Thanks all for your great help.

Got a question on INFILL...I do not need any infill in the part I am doing now...what do I set to eliminate infill?

As you can see in the part the "blades" are hollow and I do not want to infill them. My first attempt filled them in and this part was going to take 26 hours.
No infill inside the hollow blades

With slic3r, I would try setting the infill percentage to 0. I haven't tried Cura.
