Zombies!

Post by Toyguy »

My son is a huge Walking Dead fan, so I thought I'd try printing him the Zombie Hunter bust from Thingiverse as a gag Christmas gift. Repetier calculated 20 hours for the print, but it's looking more like 24 or so. Here's a couple "time lapse" pics:

It has quite a lot of support material around it yet that will be holding up the hair and some of the other features so it's hard to tell how it's coming out, but I think it's looking good. It's been printing about 19.5 hours so far and is in the 70% range of completion. I do wish the SD Printing display gave layer numbers. I might have to look into hacking that in.

More later, if it comes out OK! Otherwise, check the fail forum :)

LOL - I wondered how long it would take before someone noticed that. :)

It's actually set at 0.5, but it looks like it doesn't work correctly. I re-sliced it at 0.1 and looked at it in a close up zoom in Repetier and it looked OK. I did it again at 0.5 and it was denser but still you could see the grid in the 3D preview. For some reason though, printing from the SD card, it looks like it's doing 100%. I'm not sure why.

27.5 hours later, or thereabouts, and it's done! I have to say the MAX has impressed me with this one. It looks great, support material separated cleanly and the printer ran beautifully the whole time. I still need to do a little fine cleanup where there is some support material in a few of the deep creases but I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I think my son will like it :)

Wow, pretty nice output!

Plus, if it's ended up doing a 100% infill, in case of zombie apocalypse it'd probably bash a few skulls in too. :)

I sliced it with the default Slic3r in Repetier Host. I had to run it through Netfab to get it to load cleanly. As it came from Thingiverse it had some issues. It was printed at .02 layer height, with a first layer of 0.3. Infill was theoretically 0.5 but it looked denser than that. Material was Matterhacker Blue PLA at 190C (first layer at 195C) with the bed at 65C, using glue stick on the glass plate.

He is pretty heavy - it would make a good blunt weapon :) I'll weigh it later today but I'm not sure I want to know what it cost! I seriously was worried about running out of filament as it got near the end.
