New Member from MI

Post by Durandal »

Hi everybody, I'm a mechanical engineering student at Oakland University, I also work as a design engineer generating 3d models, manufacturing blue prints, and G-code from the 3d models for the production floor at a Detroit machine shop.

I've know about 3D printing for a while, and watched it for a while, but only in the past few months have I wanted to actually buy one. So I earmarked some of my tax return this year for one.

The primary purpose I wanted a printer for was to print up experimental gun and car parts, so I needed a printer with a large build volume. None of the Cartesian printers I looked at had the build volume I needed for my design. When I saw the video on youtube of partdaddy printing out the Defense Distributed magazine, I researched the delta configuration and came to the conclusion that it would scale very easily vertically unlike the reprap type triangle machines.

I do have two questions about scaling the Rostock up, how tall are the stock pillars and how long are the stock belts? I realize that the pillars scale directly while the belts require double the increase, so I'm just trying to figure out how much I need to order of each.

Thanks, much appreciated.

I'm still working my way through basic stuff like control and calibration. At least the g-code won't be completely foreign.

Also still have a lot to learn about the different software, what computer I'll run it on, what OS... i've got a lot to learn.

Drove out to Kalamazoo saturday to pick up my Rostock from John, had a great time and a great drive. I wound up ordering a custom rig, I'd wanted an extra 6" of build height, but somewhere along the lines our numbers got crossed and wound up with an extra 18" of build height. Thus I present, the Monster Max.

Finals week has halted work on the project, I still need to install the lower bearings and the belts, then do the wiring, which I'm not exactly looking forward to, but I should be doing test prints before the break between semesters is over.

Perhaps a prosthetic limb, but not a full grown adult. It doesn't have the diameter to build the rib cage.
