Re: Excessive stringing

Interesting! I use 200 mm/s for non-print moves - so pretty fast, but not as fast as you're going. What ended up solving my stringing problems was turning the layer fan off - I had it at a minimum speed of 80% for some reason, but reducing to to 0% cuts the stringing back to nearly nothing. I now ...

Re: Where's the Orion firmware?

Ay yi yi. GitHub brain fart: I thought I was looking at the repo listing, but I was looking at the "Popular repos" listing, and it wasn't there. Sorry and thanks!

Where's the Orion firmware?

Hi, folks, dumb question: Where's the Repetier source for the Orion? GitHub has Repetier 0.91 labeled for the Rostock, and has old firmware in the Orion folder labeled 0.83, but I don't see 0.91 for Orion. Backstory: Both heater resistors in my stock Orion hot end died. Decided to take the ...

Re: Having trouble with fan control in MC

I also see pretty wide variation in the time estimates from MC. Everything takes about 25%-60% longer to print than predicted. I've gotten used to that, but it kind of confuses me - where is that time coming from? It can't all be lost in communication overhead.

Re: October 2014 Contest ! ! !

I modeled this dagger for my ten-year-old daughter's Halloween costume - she's going as Annabeth from the Percy Jackson books, and is supposed to have a "leaf-shaped" ancient dagger made of "celestial bronze" strapped to her arm. She tweaked the curves in Blender and I did this test print today. It ...

Re: e3d v6 installation problem with peek fan

Yes, but it won't matter unless you're printing really tall stuff. I figure it doesn't matter unless what you want to print is more than ~7" and less than ~9" (on an Orion). Or, to view it another way, for things that you want to print as big as possible in one dimension, it reduces that dimension ...

Re: e3d v6 installation problem with peek fan

Again from 626Pilot: Mounting it up top makes it harder to see what it's doing, and at least on my printer, encouraged jamming. Possibly a heat issue. When it's mounted below, there's nothing next to the hot end to trap any heat. This doesn't seem common, though, so I'm trying to decide which to do!

Re: e3d v6 installation problem with peek fan

I was talking about 626Pilot's approach - mounting the e3d under the effector: Seems nice that way - you don't have to use posts at all, fan clearance is a non-issue, etc ...

Re: e3d v6 installation problem with peek fan

I've got my e3d v6 assembled and am trying to figure out all the next steps for an Orion. When you mount your hotend under the effector, doesn't that lose you a couple of inches of build height? That seems worth it if it's unreliable mounted above, but I'm trying to weigh that vs. others seeming to ...

Re: Excessive stringing

Thanks for posting your settings! They didn't fix it for me, but it was a good thing to try.

It seems like there are a lot of distinct things that can cause stringing. The world needs a good automated 3D printing troubleshooter!

Re: Excessive stringing

Great idea, thanks - I wouldn't have thought of that being relevant to stringing. It's good to know you got to the bottom of your issue! I will look into the pulley set screws (will have to do some reading, as I don't know where those are). I can't move the cheapskates by hand when the motors are ...

Re: Excessive stringing

I have no doubt that different filament brands (and lots, and spools) vary in quality in various ways. And I agree, some spools just seem like bad news - though I still generally assume that I have some settings wrong. But, I also see that I sometimes get a great print from a spool, then later on ...

Re: Excessive stringing

I have very little to add, except that I'm in the same boat - stringing wherever stringing could occur, and I've tried tweaking every setting in the slicers. Another factor I've been wondering about is humidity in the ambient air - I started really noticing the stringing when the weather got hot and ...

Re: MatterControl issues...

My only thought on the slicer is to try the "Repair" settings and see if they make a difference. But yes, it appears to be as-intended that when you press Save when editing an STL file in MatterControl, you are saving over the original .STL file; when you press Save As, you will save a copy to ...

Re: MatterControl issues...

I've never noticed it because I don't rely on the sliced g-code to do the preheat, I use the control panel on the host software or the LCD. I want it up to temperature, the bed heat soaked and the nozzle primed before I get near a print job. I use the time to do a slice and preview the layers to ...

Extruder jamming? Consider greasing the spool support

This is pretty simple: My Orion's extruder was skipping/kicking back. The hot end might be a little jammed, not 100% sure, but the problem seemed to come and go. I seemed to get it mostly on the 1 kg filament spools that I got from SeeMeCNC, but not on the very small spools I had left over from a ...

Re: Hello from Ithaca, New York - and basic hot end question

Heh - no problem, digging into the details and possibilities is a great welcome! That looks really nice and compact, and the magnetic attachment seems very slick. Seems like it would make it easy to fuss with the hot end as well as provide a failsafe if things got out of control - it'll fall off ...
